I am pleased to say that based on my experience and observation, I have witnessed the success of natural therapies for the treatment of depression.
National Institute for Mental Health, estimates that approximately 58 million people in the United States currently live with depression. This is a huge number. Depression occurs from a variety of different reasons. It can be genetic, can be caused by substance abuse, major life changes or as a reaction to an illness to name a few of the main causes. Internally, it consists of a chemical imbalance in the brain.
It is a fact that depression is a debilitating condition, and how to effectively deal with it, has been a much studied subject. Before going any further I want to make it clear that clinical depression should be referred to a qualified physician. Natural Ways to Overcome Depression
My focus for this article is about overcoming depression without medication. I strongly advocate that by combining natural supplements with healthy changes in your lifestyle, you may be able to greatly alleviate depression symptoms without the negative side effects of prescription drugs. Keep in mind that all prescription medication has at least some adverse effect on you and your body. The following are some of the highly effective methods on how to overcome depression without medication, unless it is absolutely necessary.
Try Natural Supplements
For thousands of years all over the world people have relied on herbs and tonics to treat and even cure a number of ailments. In fact it is believed by some that nature offers us all that we really need to maintain our health. Today more than ever before, studies are being performed on natural solutions. We are being presented with many new and rediscovered, scientifically formulated and refined natural supplements that are offering many people options to a healthier treatment plan that were not available until recently.
We know that by stimulating the natural substances in the brain, we can safely assist the brain to restore it’s chemical balance. Natural supplements provide alternatives to big brand synthetic medication. They safely assist to restore the brain’s neurotransmitter biochemicals such as Serotonin, Dopamine, Norepinephrine and GABA. This improves the mood, reduces the feeling of depression and promotes overall happiness and well being.
Meditation and Yoga
The ancient practice of meditation and yoga have been recognized by Neuroscientists as highly effective treatments for alleviating anxiety and depression symptoms. They work by shifting the brain’s activity from the anxiety prone right frontal cortex and into the calmer left frontal cortex. This shift results in decreased depression and anxiety, develops better focus and concentration and reduces the risk of serious illness. In addition, yoga and meditation are essential for the increase of spiritual awareness.
If you are curious as to how to deal with depression by yourself, I strongly recommend experimenting with Zen and Vipassana meditation techniques, as well as Bikram or Raja yoga practices to name a few. These practices are among the best ways to beat depression without drugs and together with proper rest, correct diet and quality natural supplements may not only improve your condition, but can also greatly enhance your overall health.
In Conclusion a Few Words About Diet and Rest
I may be repeating myself here, but I can not over emphasize the importance of healthy diet and adequate rest. No health program can be complete without these two factors. Our bodies are basically machines. A machine needs to consume fuel in order to function, as well as requires periods of non operation during which time it gets maintained and repaired.
This is a crude analogy, but it drives the point home. You don’t have to be a vegan to have a healthy diet. By simply controlling the quality and quantity of your food intake, you will accomplish much toward improving your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and will feel the difference in your daily life.
The subject of rest speaks for itself. If you need stimulants such as coffee, sodas or energy drinks to get you through the day, you are probably sleep deprived. Don’t feel bad, many of us are. In fact, millions of Americans are chronically under rested. This condition affects your mood, your health and even your safety. In fact, it is advised that on the average we need a minimum of 8 hours of sleep per night.
I encourage you to experiment by adding an extra half hour to an hour of extra sleep and see if you notice a positive change in your mood and well being. And as always, I wish you much success in your journey toward simpler, healthier and more rewarding life today.
Live well. Vlad
