how to live in the present instead of the future

I’ve written much about how to live in the present, as opposed to the past. But what about the future? What lies ahead? Humans have a keen desire to know what to expect next. And while it’s alright to wonder about the future, we must be careful not to project our own expectations into what comes next.

The future belongs to the Infinite. In other words, we will not know it until it reveals itself to us in the present. We can hypothesize, speculate, daydream, wish and hope. We can attempt to manifest and project. In fact, we can bang our heads with determination of creating our future, only to be reminded time and time again of our powerlessness in that respect.

We are a product of our experiences, memories and associations. In essence, we are a projection of our past. This is why we should exercise caution when defining the future by our own expectations and desires. The future is a source of unlimited possibilities. By projecting our expectations that are limited by our likes and dislikes, we are restricting ourself to the full potential our future holds.

Be happy in the present moment

When you think about it, you will realize that the present moment is all we’ve got. Cultivate being happy right now. Don’t wait, or place conditions on your contentment. Don’t fall for the “if only” trap. There is no such thing as conditional happiness. Nothing outside of yourself will give you greater capacity for happiness, then you already possess at this very moment.

Let the future take care of itself

The Cosmic wheels are turning, and the future will come. It may not come the way you want, or expect it to come. It may not come at the time of your choosing. But rest assured that when it does come, it will be the correct future for you. There is no need to force it under your will.

Everything that happens to you, happens for a reason. Your job is not to blindly react to the future when it comes, but rather try to understand why you are receiving this particular life. To figure out what to do with the life you have. Quite possibly, this is the reason why you’re here.

Plant the seeds of good karma

Along the way in life, create goodness around you. Spread positive energy and kind deeds. To assure the best possible future for yourself, plant the seeds of good karma today. Because everything matters. Each deed and every action. No matter how seemingly small or insignificant.

Don’t expect anything in return

When you doing good deeds, don’t expect anything in return. A true kind deeds are always self-fulfilling. They are not done in anticipation of a reward. We have no way of knowing what long term impact our actions will create in our life, and in the lives of others. All we can do, is to do the right thing right now. Then maintain a detachment from the outcome.

In Conclusion

The above proves once again, that living in the present moment is the best place to be. Leave the future alone. Let it evolve naturally, according to the laws of the Universe. And according to each individual karma. We can not begin to understand what will be best for us in the long run. Instead of defining the future, let the future define you.

Live well. Vlad

I really enjoyed reading this. I liked how you said instead of defining the future, let the future define you. I’m going to keep this in mind everyday. Thank you!
